This One AI Skill Pays More Than a College Degree — Here's Who's Hiring, and Where

AI jobs are paying huge money right now. But not every AI skill pays the same. Some skills pay a little more. One skill pays the most of all. Let's break it down in simple words.

Now, let’s dive in.

Which AI Skill Pays the Most?

The biggest money is in something called "LLM fine-tuning."

In simple words: Big companies build huge AI models (like ChatGPT or Claude). But a normal model doesn't know everything about one company's work. So companies hire people who can train that AI to work better for their specific job — like helping doctors, lawyers, or customer support teams.

This skill is rare. Not many people know how to do it well. And that's why it pays so much.

People who know how to fine-tune AI models earn around $208,000 a year on average. That's more than most people earn even after years of a college degree.

Just knowing how AI language models work (without fine-tuning) also pays well: around $199,000 a year, with close to 57,000 job openings.

Other skills that pay big money too:

  • Building AI systems that can work on their own (called "agentic AI") — about $197,400 a year, with around 42,000 job openings.

  • Deciding which AI products a company should build (AI Product Manager) — about $195,000 a year.

  • Deep learning (a basic AI skill many companies need) — this has the most job openings of all, over 67,000, paying about $179,000 a year on average.

At the very top level, the pay gets crazy. Senior AI scientists at big AI companies can earn between $300,000 and $2 million a year, mostly through company stock.

And here's a simple fact: people with AI skills earn about 21% more than people without them. If they know several AI skills, they earn 43% more.

Which Companies Are Hiring the Most?

Not every company pays the same, and not every company hires the same amount.

The companies that pay the most money: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, xAI, and Perplexity build the biggest AI models — and they pay the most. New employees start around $200,000, and experienced people can earn more than $400,000.

Big companies that pay well but usually a bit less: Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Palantir, and Databricks pay strong AI salaries too, though usually not as high as the top AI-only companies. But they give stock that can be sold quickly, which many people like.

Companies hiring the most people (not always the highest pay): Meta, Google, and Microsoft each have between 500 and 850 open AI jobs at once. On top of that, Accenture said it is spending $3 billion on AI and plans to double its AI staff to 80,000 people.

Which US State Is Leading in AI Jobs?

If you're wondering where all these jobs actually are — one state is far ahead of everyone else.

California has the most AI jobs by far, with 11,646 open AI positions. New York comes next with 4,758, and Texas is third with 4,079.

Together, California, Texas, and New York make up more than 45% of all AI jobs in the whole country.

But California isn't the only place to watch. Seattle, Austin, and Boston are growing the fastest, each adding over 35% more AI jobs every year.

And if money goes further where you live matters too. Houston pays AI workers $140,000 to $185,000 a year, but the cost of living there is much cheaper than in New York, so the money stretches further.

Simple Takeaway

If you want to enter AI and earn good money, don't just learn "AI" in general. Learn how to fine-tune AI models for real business problems — that's the most valuable and best-paying skill right now. And if you're picking where to work, California still leads, but cities like Austin, Seattle, and Houston are becoming smart choices too — good pay, lower cost of living, and fast-growing job markets.
